Fish Behaviors in Electromagnetic Fields

Elham Foroozandeh and Pouya Derakhshan-Barjoei

Electromagnetic Fields (ELFs) may change biological organisms' behaviors and brain mechanisms. There are some findings about laboratory animal’s behaviors after exposure to electromagnetic fields but the findings about changes in marine especially fish are limited. In this mini review after presentation of brain structure in teleost fish, the effects of ELFs on behaviors of fish are expressed.

The Efficacy and Safety of Acarbose compared with Voglibose in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Lian Liu, Song Wei Su, Yong Xu, Qin Wan, Xiao Ling Yang, Yu Ying Tang and Hong Yan Sun

Background: Acarbose and voglibose are alpha-glucosidase inhibitors and they are an effective therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus. Our aim is to directly compare the efficacy and safety of acarbose and voglibose for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods:
We searched the international web databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science) with an English language restriction (up to August, 2016). In addition, we checked bibliographies of each included study and the latest reviews to identify additional studies. For each clinical outcome, dichotomous data were analyzed by using the risk ratio (RR) with the 95% confidence interval (CI). Continuous outcomes measured on the same scale and units were analyzed by using weighted mean differences (WMD) with the 95% confidence interval (CI); if continuous outcomes were measured on the different scale or units, it were analyzed by using standardised mean differences (SMD) with the 95% confidence interval (CI).
Results: There are no differences in glycemic control between acarbose and voglibose while adverse events in acarbose group were higher than voglibose group.
Conclusion: Our limited evidence finds that voglibose is more suitable for the treatment of type 2 diabetes compared with acarbose. Further well-designed and multicentric RCTs with larger sample are required to confirm these findings.

Case Report: An Unusual Case of Purtscher's Retinopathy

Sunila Jain, Salma Babiker and Tiarnan D Keenan

Purtscher retinopathy is a hemorrhagic and vasoocclusive vasculopathy and was first described as a syndrome of sudden blindness associated with severe head trauma. We present a case report of an unusual case of this condition where this is unilateral and without direct head trauma. We also discuss the current literature about this rare condition.

Human Placental Extracts Improve Ovarian Function by Reducing Follicular Atresia in Mice With CTX-Induced Premature Ovarian Failure

Bao-Fang Zhang, Lei Yu, YongMei Liu, Xue Ke Zhao, Li Li Zhu, Ming-Liang Cheng and YaXin Hu

The details of the pathogenic mechanisms underlying premature ovarian failure (POF) remain unknown. Accumulating evidence suggests that primordial follicle inactivity, disorders affecting follicular survival and growth and follicular atresia may affect an individual’s susceptibility to POF. The Rictor/mTORC2/Akt/Foxo3a pathway plays a central role in cytoskeletal construction and follicle survival. As a stronger alkylating agent that exerts immunosuppressive effects, cyclophosphamide (CTX) is widely used in clinical practice, especially in cancer. However, it also has significant reproductive toxicity. CTX accelerates the development of ovarian follicles into mature follicles, resulting in a decreased follicular reserve and ultimately leading to ovarian failure or even POF. We have sought to research effective methods to reduce the damage caused by CTX. Here, we investigated the protective role of human placental extracts on CTX-induced ovarian injury in mice. We describe the effects of HEP on histopathology, the number of atretic follicles, the weight of the ovary, serum hormone levels and apoptosis in granulosa cells. Our data show that ovarian injury can be effectively attenuated by HPE administration. Ovarian weight was higher, the number of atretic follicles was lower, the serum levels of the hormones E2 and P were higher, and the rate of apoptosis and the serum levels of the hormones LH and FSH were lower in granulosa cells in mice treated with HPE for 2 weeks than in the control group. A t the molecular level, our results demonstrated that HPE can be used to inhibit the expression of p-Rictor, Bad, Bax and PPAR and activate the expression of p-Akt and p-Foxo3a, thus preventing follicular granulosa cells from undergoing a higher rate of apoptosis and blocking atresia follicle formation. These effects alleviated CTX-induced ovarian injury by affecting the Rictor/mTORC2/Akt/Foxo3a signalling pathway.

Diagnosis of Atrial Fibrillation in a Horse in Association with Microfilariasis

Sudhakara Reddy B and Sivajothi S

A 12-year-old crossbred mare was presented to the clinic with a history of frequent reduction in the working capacity. Clinical examination revealed congested mucus membranes, elevated respiratory rate and arrhythmia. Laboratory analysis revealed the anemia, lowered packed cell volume, lowered albumin, total protein, sodium and potassium levels. Electrocardiography confirmed the presence of the atrial fibrillation and wet blood film examination showed the presence of the motile microfilaria organisms. The horse was treated with oral administration of quinidine sulfate and other supportive therapy.

Breast Cancer Detection using Artificial Neural Networks

Nadeem Tariq

Breast cancer is very common and is considered as the second dangerous disease all over the world due to its death rate. Affected can survive if the disease diagnoses before the appearance of major physical changes in the body. Now a day, mammographic (X-ray of breast region) images are widely used for premature revealing of breast cancer. Aim of the proposed system is to design a Computer Aided Diagnosis system (CAD) used to distinguish between benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) mammogram. CAD system are used to help radiologist to increase his diagnosis accuracy. In the proposed system, texture features from mammogram were calculated using Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) along 0°, from the calculate features most effective features having large contribution to achieve the desired output were chosen and applied to Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for training and classification, as ANN is widely use in various field such as, pattern recognition, medical diagnosis, machine learning and so on. For this research work mini-MIAS database is used and the overall sensitivity, specificity and accuracy achieved by using the proposed system is 99.3%, 100% and 99.4% respectively.

Lung Adenocarcinoma with Lymphangitic Carcinomatosis Showing Rapid Response to Anti-PD-1 Immunotherapy: A Brief Report

Dothard A, Lycan T and Petty WJ

Lymphangitic carcinomatosis is a difficult to treat disease entity and usually portends a poor prognosis given the advanced state in which it is often diagnosed. Treatment is usually based on standard therapy of the primary malignancy, but in most cases, is palliative in nature. This case highlights the potential for PD-1 immunotherapy as both a rapid and durable treatment for lymphangitic carcinomatosis.
