Artificial Intelligence and 5G Will Force Journalism Schools to Accentuate the Basics in Instruction

Benjamin Davis

This reflection considers the need for journalism schools to more intensely teach skills that cannot be replicated by AI or 5G. Critical thinking and writing are examples of Non-curation skills and they may need to be taught more because they cannot be mimicked by AI. Curation skills involve borrowing from other sources, which include human and digital platforms. It might be prudent to teach curation skills as a tool that is meant to strictly support non-curation journalism skills - which are commanded only by a human. The most secure journalism jobs will be those which cannot be replicated by AI.

Women Journalists in Lebanon: The Broken Ladder

Mireille El Hajj

Despite making up a majority and being active in the media field, Lebanese women journalists are still excluded from top management positions. This paper studies the factors that hinder Lebanese women journalists from climbing the ladder to top levels. It examines the status of women journalists in leadership positions in the media field, studies the obstacles and the barriers, and explores the glass ceiling they face. It is a blend of qualitative and quantitative approaches, as we looked for consistency among knowledgeable informants, to ensure comprehensive explanations and in-depth understanding of the related issues. The findings of the paper investigate media journalists’ points-ofview in terms of gender diversity and gender discrimination. They shed the light on the main obstacles, women and men journalists interviewees felt about women lack of progress as well as their inability to assume a place in decision making positions. However, this study is not without its limitations; therefore, it recommends further research in order to explicitly explore strategies that promote active participation of women in decision making structures in media in Lebanon. It creates value not only for the media sector but benefits as well the Lebanese society at large.

Intersectional Analysis of Media Representation of Immigrants in Norway: The Case of 'The Local (Norway Edition)' Online Newspaper

Kibrom Berhane Gessesse

The study is intersectional analysis of media representation of immigrants in Norway. It is conducted based on stories reported by the online newspaper named The Local (Norway edition). To investigate the issue, the study employed content analysis of two news articles and a (“how-to”) feature article. The articles are selected purposively in terms of their contents and time of publication. Finally the study found out that in writing about immigrants (and their issues) the selected online newspaper employs intersection of representation mechanisms. It dominantly uses different classificatory terms, polemic representation, thematic anchoring and representations in antinomies.
