Noureen Mazhar, Mohtsim Shah, Shahbaz Basheer, Sumaira Sattar, Asma Zia Bukhari and Labeeb Ahmad

Background: This study aims to provide a systematic review of scientific literature on the prevalence of Erb’s Palsy in shoulder dystocia. Shoulder dystocia is defined as an impaction of the anterior shoulder against the maternal symphysis pubis after the fetus has birthed, and occurs when the breadth of shoulder exceeds the diameter of the pelvic inlet.

Purpose of the study: The object of the study was to determine the frequency of Erb’s Palsy in shoulder dystocia and develop some guidelines to reduce the risk of Erb’s Palsy in new-born babies.

Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study. Data was collected in Bakhtawar Amin Hospital and Children Hospital, Multan. Non-Probability purposive sampling technique was used to collect the data. The sample size was 62.

Results: The frequency of shoulder dystocia was highest in 30 years of age group which was 17.7% & was lowest in 35 years of age group which was 3.2%. 61.3% of cases have a breech presentation with shoulder dystocia & 38.7% shoulder dystocia cases had vertex presentation. The relation between shoulder dystocia and C-section was significant. 4.8% of cases with shoulder dystocia had C-section and 95.2% cases had normal vaginal delivery. 14.5% of the shoulder dystocia cases had no significant disease. The relation between Shoulder dystocia and obesity was very significant. 45.2% cases had maternal obesity followed by hypertension and viral infection with percentages 33.9% and 6.5% respectively. 14.5% of shoulder dystocia cases had no significant complication during pregnancy. 53.2% Shoulder dystocia cases had pre-eclampsia is a complication that is very significant followed by lowest complication placenta previa having 9.7% cases. 22.6% of cases had gestational diabetes as well. The relation between overweight and shoulder dystocia was significant having 79% cases. Interestingly our study shows that 21% of cases had normal fetal weight. The relation between overweight & shoulder dystocia was significant having 79% cases. Interestingly our study shows that 21% of cases had normal fetal weight.

Conclusion: Our study indicates that 82.3% cases of shoulder Dystocia had Erb’s palsy that is alarming situation.)

Comparison of Task Oriented Approach and Mirror Therapy for Post-stroke Hand Function Rehabilitation

B Ragamai and K Madhavi

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of task-oriented therapy and mirror therapy on improving hand function in post-stroke patients.

Methods: Total subjects 30 were randomly divided into two groups: the task-oriented group (15 patients) and the mirror therapy group (15 patients). The task-oriented group underwent task-oriented training for 45 mins a day for 5 days a week for 4 weeks. The mirror therapy group underwent a mirror therapy program under the same schedule as task-oriented therapy. The manual dexterity and motor functioning of the hand were evaluated before the intervention and 4 weeks after the intervention by using FMA (Fugl-Meyer assessment) and BBT (Box & Block test).

Results: Hand function of all patients increased significantly after the 4-week intervention program on the evaluation of motor function and manual dexterity by FMA and BBT in both the groups of Task-Oriented approach and Mirror therapy, but Group A Task-oriented approach improved more significantly when compared to Group B Mirror therapy.

Conclusion: The treatment effect was more in patients who received a Task-Oriented approach compared to Mirror therapy. These findings suggest that the Task-Oriented approach was more effective in post stoke hand function rehabilitation.

Evaluation of Radiation Doses in Adult Patients of Routine Computed Tomography Examination in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria

Ngarama SM and Mohammedb IB

Volume computed tomography dose index (CTDIvol) and the dose length product (DLP) represents an average doses within a scan dose for a standardized CTDI measurement. They are the useful indicators of the dose measurements for a specific examination protocol. In each case dose evaluations were extracted retrospectively and manually from the operating console. CT examination and radiation doses were determined using the General electric (GE) Bright speed 16-slice scanner. Results are presented in terms of the volume computed tomography dose index (CTDIvol) and dose length product (DLP) for head, Chest and abdomen. The 16-slice capacity and tube potential uniform (120 kVp) was used in the centre while tube current was within a narrow range (200-250 mA). The 75th percentile of adult CTDIvol for head, chest and abdomen are 85 mGy, 13.34 mGy and 13.29 mGy respectively and the corresponding DLP values 1437.47 mGy*cm, 417.49 and 656.02 mGy*m. The finding shows a considerably high CTDIvol and DLP values for adult head comparable to the recommendations of the European Commission, thus optimization is required.

Presence of Vestibular Dysfunction in Individuals with Motion Sickness

Snehal Joshi and Vishakha Shelar

Aim and Objective: To study if there is vestibular dysfunction in individuals with motion sickness.

Type of Study: Correlation study

Study Population: Motion sickness Individuals from age 20-40 years and fulfilling the inclusion criteria were approached from the community for the study. Interested individuals were asked to fill the motion sickness questionnaire for the information about the symptoms. Vestibular function clinical tests like Dynamic Visual Acuity [DVA], Modified clinical test of sensory interaction on balance (MCTSIB) and Head thrust test were used to assess vestibular dysfunction in these individuals Results were obtained using descriptive statistical analysis.

Results and Conclusion: DVA was positive amongst 52.6% (88/167) individuals, 92.8% (155/167) individuals. Head thrust was not positive.
